On our first visit to W'town, we saw historic Point Gellibrand and the Rotunda (a restaurant on the beach with a takeaway on the first level selling fish n chips etc), a covered picnic area, a beach, and a carpark. Not a whiff of the famous tourist strip with restaurants and shops and a village atmosphere.
Afternote:
Turns out we were at the wrong section of W'town. The tourist strip is Nelson Place and The Strand.
Yest, we drove by again, this time with Hui Mei, and discovered more beach, plus Nelsons Place and The Strand! Apparently, if we had continued walking from Pt G, we would have found it ourselves. :)
It was another of those windy, shivery days where you couldn't imagine anyone wanting to take a dip, but there we were, in pullovers and coats, hands deep in our pockets to keep warm, gaping at the number of people out cycling, in-line skating, frolicking in the freezing waves. How do these pple do it? Then HM's colleague (from Sg, mind) Karen jogged by, and we saw that she too was dressed (only) in pullover and shorts. Incredible.
Beth had a great time on the beach digging sandcastles with her newly acquired bucket-and-spade set from St Vincent's thrift shop in Werribee ($3 for the lot!) while CA tried to keep his newspapers from flapping away in the wind. For dinner, we went to this bistro facing the bay, where you could see boats bobbing and the lights of Melb city twinkling across the water as the sun set.
It being Thu, the dinner special was steak (yum!) with a side choice of salad, steamed vege or mashed potato - $12 only! It was tasty, juicy, succulent, right down to the crispy layer of fat, but for some reason, I couldn't get to the end of it. Dessert was better. HM and I shared a sticky date pudding with ice cream, which was just right for the 2 of us....until Beth spied it and wanted some! And then there were 3....
