Many People, One Nation

Sounds like a National Day song from back home, doesn't it? :-)

This was the theme of Sunday's Family Service.

A celebration of our nations of origin and our arrival in Australia. Come in your national dress. Bring your national food to share over lunch. And let us worship together remembering that our cultural diversity is complemented by our Christian unity.

Service was extra special. The Huttons celebrated the 25th anniversary of their arrival in Oz (they used to live in England and Germany). We got into groups to discuss what it is that bonds us together despite our different nationalities (most people came up with the same symbol: the Cross). The elders and the kids did a hand puppet segment. The youths rocked the house with a foot-stomping performance. I was awe-struck by their musical talent; they looked like a regular boy band in action, esp Mark's son Matt, who played the acoustic guitar, sang like a real pro, and could pass for Frodo in LOTR any day with his gorgeous dark curls!

And to cap it all, the Huttons sponsored an English lunch (with Scotch eggs, cold ham, roast beef, breads and salad) and every family brought its idea of a national dessert. This meant an overwhelming array of jellies, cake, trifles, ice cream....and in a corner of the buffet table, the very Singaporean Rockmelon & Honeydew Sago in Coconut Milk, which Cheng Ann stayed up till 1 am the previous night to blend, boil and mix. It was a good thing we brought just one pot of the stuff, seeing that the Ozzies are not terribly adventurous with food!
