Term 1 ended today for the kids at Beth's kinder. They're off for the next 2 weeks. Am looking through parenting mags for ideas on how to keep The Easily Bored One meaningfully occupied till Term 2...
Parents and grandparents were invited to come by earlier than usual today to watch the kids put on their Easter Bonnet Parade, where they catwalked wearing their handmade creations (Easter bunny hats made from ice cream cartons - another victory for recycling!).
It was funny to see the variety of facial expressions as the models came forward one by one. There were the photogenic ones who enjoyed smiling for the camera (a rare minority), the shy ones who stuck out their tongues or refused to smile (like Beth), the ones who couldn't wait to get off the stage and away from all this nonsense, the clowns who acted dramatically for a few laughs...
There was also an Easter Egg hunt in the playground ("Jayden found 3 eggs!" Beth reported excitedly), an Easter raffle to raise funds, and a Guess The Number of Easter Eggs competition - again to raise funds.
Come to think of it, schools in Oz are very into fundraising, and it's done in a variety of ways. There are the ubiquitous sausage sizzles (a common feature at community events), but more popular are the less physically strenuous methods like the sale of merchandise (sticker labels, hot cross buns, T-shirts, tea towels...). The idea is that the school teams up with a certain retailer, parents place their orders, a certain % of the sales goes to the school for its fundraising efforts, and the coordinator gets a gift or commission. Win-Win for everyone.
Last month, Beth's school teamed up with Stuck On You, so we ordered some all-purpose gift labels for Christmas and birthdays. This month, it's Bakers Delight. We came home today with 1/2 doz each of Choc Chip and Traditional hot cross buns. *Yum*
