My favourite part of our family walks is looking at our neighbours' houses.
I look at the architectural design, the external facade (brick? weatherboard? plastered over and painted?), door designs, window designs, drapes (curtains? timber blinds?), how gardens are laid out, whether they are low-maintenance, the sorts of plants people grow...
It's just fascinating to see the sorts of choices people make about their living spaces, and how these choices in turn influence the look and feel of a neighbourhood.
Being able to see the effect of different colours and designs at play lets me see right away what works and what doesn't, which is good as I'm not someone who can picture things in my head. For instance, one house has blue and purple walls and black garage doors that work quite well with its contemporary design, but might look out of place on a brick veneer home.
There's a row of weatherboard houses we saw in the street behind the one we normally walk, but I couldn't find the road that leads there. WBs can look really charming, and we know some in the inner suburbs that are highly prized for their antiquity, especially if they've had a modern makeover on the inside.
Wouldn't it be fun to be paid to visit people's homes and write about them? That wouldn't be work at all. :-)
