On the street where we live...
It is peaceful and safe.
Cars come and go throughout the day. The drivers wave as they drive past.
Everyone knows everyone.
Everyone who lives here loves the neighbourhood and few move away.
The other day, we were making our way to the house from the carport - a process made laborious because Beth had fallen asleep and had to be carried - when a couple strolling on the other side of the road came over.
"Hello, how are ya? I'm Margaret," said the smiling lady with striking dark eyes and dark hair. "So, you moved in recently?"
"Les," offered the man. Tall, gently spoken, with silver hair peeking from under his cap.
We introduced ourselves and the children.
L&M tell us they're one of four families on our street that are "the original". They moved here when they got married, built their home, started their family ("We were like you," said Les, gesturing at us with our arms full of kids and barang barang)...and have never moved. Their kids are 15 and 18.
They told us who's who and who lives in which house.
Rita & husband run The Cake Stand from their home.
We know about The Cake Stand because my driving instructor used them for her son's wedding recently, and raved about how beautiful the cake was.
"Rita does fantastic cakes. You can give her a photo of your kid, and she will scan it and there's the birthday cake with your kid's face on it!"
Gerald & Angela run a catering business.
"And we live right in between the cake business and the caterer!" laughed Les.
