When we bought our home, the building inspector had suggested we replace the timber fence adjoining our Pakistani neighbours' place, because the fence is rotting in parts. (Why didn't the previous owner install a Colorbond fence like he did the rest of the house??)
Problem is, the next-door neighbours are tenants; we've never met the house owners and wouldn't know how to contact them.
Recently, I had the gardener give me his assessment of the condition of the fence. He suggested removing all the ivy as it's practically obscured the fence and has crawled up my neighbour's roof. Not very neighbourly huh?
So he came on a Tue morning with his teenage son (said it was better he came along so he wouldn't fight with his sisters at home!) and his apprentice, a giant of a guy with a lovely, good-natured smile.
It took all three of them to restore the fence to ivy-lessness. At one point, said gardener had to climb over fence on to neighbour's side to hack away at the offending ivy.
But the hard work's done now and we'll just have to keep an eye on the ivy to see it doesn't get out of control.
