If you have a Medicare card, there are 2 ways of paying to see a doctor.
a. Some doctors bulk bill, meaning that the clinic bills Medicare directly, so you don't have to be out of pocket when you see the doctor. You just need to produce your Medicare card during your appointment, and the rest is taken care of. The GP I went to in Bundoora (the Bundoora Family Clinic) to obtain a referral to my gynae practises BB.
b. Some doctors charge you upfront and provide a Medicare rebate, which means you need to fill in a claim form and submit it to Medicare with your claim details (the doctor you saw, the date, the invoice number). Medicare will then reimburse you by crediting the amount to your bank account. My gynae (Dr Claude Calandra of Specialist Clinic in Hoppers Crossing) charged us $100 for my first visit, which was this evening.
