Say No To Nuclear In Werribee

This week, we received an invitation to add our names to a petition to be sent to the Howard Government.

The letter from Deputy Labour Leader Julia Gillard MP read:

"I am writing to alert you to recent reports that Werribee and its surrounds has been nominated as a potential site for one of the Howard Government's proposed nuclear power plants.

John Howard has already made up his mind on nuclear power. He has committed himself to 25 nuclear reactors across Australia.

Disturbingly a recent report by the Australia Institute has listed Werribee as a potential site for one of these reactors, due to its proximity to electricity and transport infrastructure, major load centres and large quantities of water for cooling.

Nuclear power is not the right climate change solution for Australia; it's too expensive, too dangerous and there are better energy alternatives. Labor has said all along that the best way to meet Australia's climate change needs is to invest in clean energy sources such as natural gas, wind, solar and geothermal solutions.

I strongly oppose any nuclear reactors or waste dumps being sited in our region and I have started a petition to let the Howard Government know that their nuclear reactors and radioactive waste dumps are not wanted here.

I have enclosed a copy of the petition for you to fill out and return to my office. Feel free to distribute the petition to your family and friends - the more people that tell John Howard we don't want one of his nuclear reactors in our backyard, the better.

Yours sincerely

Our family has added its 4 signatures' worth of contribution to this cause.

Beth would like me to add a fifth: Scottie.
