At breakfast this morning, Beth was poring through a brochure on the latest movies.
She pointed to a review with a picture of a penguin and announced,"Happy Feet!"
Cheng Ann and I looked at the review and were astonished. The girl can read!
Beth didn't seem to realize the impact her words had on her parents.
She continued scanning the brochure, and found another kids' movie review.
"Flushed Away!" she proclaimed.
Our mouths fell open.
We had been assuming all along that she could read/recognize certain words only after we'd read the book to her first, but it looks like sometime in the past week, she's taken a quantum leap of sorts in connecting alphabets and making sense of them.
It's such a wonderful thing when a child learns to read. Soon, she'll be reading independently and then writing and then creating her own stories and...wow, the possibilities that will open up before her! I have always loved reading and have vivid memories of my mum reading to me while I sat on my potty (aged 3). How lovely to see Beth starting on her own journey of discovery!
