One of our family's favourite pastimes is browsing Handyman and Better Homes and Gardens mags and watching The Outdoor Room With Jamie Durie.
DIY home improvement is huge in Australia. The experts make it look as if a backyard makeover is something you can accomplish in a day and then sit back and enjoy the results, beer in hand.
In a spirit of DIY can-do, I started dreaming out loud of how we could remodel our ensuite.
The first thing, I declared, would be to rip up the carpet (our bathroom is carpeted, I kid you not!) and replace it with...
Tiles? Ex, but they sure bring a bathroom up to date immediately.
What would be a good alternative? Vinyl? Lino?
And while we're at it, we need to replace the 20 y.o. toilet, the cracked sink, install extra storage under the vanity counter...
And yes, paint the daggy brown tiles in the shower recess. Maybe some White Knight white tile paint will do the trick?
But before all that, we need to paint the walk-in robes because you can see stains and incomplete paintwork on all the walls and ceiling.
What colour shall it be, something neutral or something daring like fuschia?
At which point CA interrupted my reverie and asked, "But are any of these things ESSENTIAL?"
Good point.
Of course they're not essential, in a die-die-cannot-do-without sense. They're nice-to-have, if aesthetics and style and personal comfort are good enough reasons to spend money.
But it's a good reminder.
It's tempting to get caught up in promises of a lifestyle makeover with a change of furniture or floorings or a wardrobe reorg...and to overlook the makeover of the heart and all the things that have value beyond this short lifetime.
For where your treasure is, there will be your heart also.
